The Good Pain

These photographs are based on a year-long project of participant observation among female crossfitters. I look into the relationship between senses, perception and knowledge construction through the idea of “good pain”.
The concept of good pain brings forth the two opposing mandates prevalent in Western thought; work ethic and pleasure ethic.
This contradiction is contested and conformed to by women in a cultural environment that encourages continuous competition and aspiration for betterment.
